The cleaning of agricultural stables is to be carried out in a manner treating the floor carefully by means of one or more sliding plates (figure) mounted on a travelling frame (a). An electrical drive (d) attached to the travelling frame and having a current supply from outside the region of the animals makes it possible to travel over the predetermined runway. In semi-automatic or fully automatic operation, the pit cleaner runs under or through animal partitions (n) adapted to the cleaner. During the return also, it is to be possible, if the farmer so desires, to remove dung which has occurred in the meantime. The use of the self-propelled pit cleaner is intended to improve low-straw or strawless stable systems in conjunction with the appropriate floor design. Operating reliability is to be increased in comparison with existing installations. The travelling frame (a) of the pit cleaner will, as far as possible, not exceed a constructional height of ten to twenty centimetres. A low running speed of up to approximately three metres per minute will have no adverse effect on the behaviour of the animals. IMAGE
