4,4,5,8-Tetramethyl-1-oxaspiro[2.5]octane, a novel oxirane compound, is prepared from 2,2,3,6-tetramethyl-1-cyclohexanone by methylenation of the latter followed by epoxidation of the 1,2,2,4-tetramethyl-3-methylenecyclohexane obtained. The reaction is carried out by means of a Wittig reagent or with dimethylsulphonium methylide under the conditions of the so-called Corey-Chaykovsky reaction. …??The dimethylsulphonium methylide can be obtained by reaction of trimethylsulphonium chloride with sodium hydroxide or of dimethyl sulphide and dimethyl sulphate with sodium hydroxide in dimethyl sulphoxide.
