An asymmetric hollow filamentary carbon membrane having an excellent gas-separating property and superior heat and solvent resistances, comprises 70 to 93% by weight of carbon, 3.5 to 7.0% by weight of nitrogen, 1.0 to 4.0% by weight of hydrogen and the balance consisting of oxygen, sulfur and/or other elements, and has an outside dense layer and an inside porous base layer, which asymmetric membrane is prepared by thermally stabilizing an asymmetric aromatic polyimide hollow filament at 250 to 495°C in an oxygen-containing gas atmosphere, partially carbonizing at 500°C to 900°C in an inert gas atmosphere, and optionally, heat treating at 250°C to 450°C in an oxygen-containing gas atmosphere.
