PURPOSE: To simply obtain 2,4-dihydroxyacetophenone at a low cost by reacting resorcinol with acetic acid in the presence of a protonic acid catalyst while removing water formed as a by-product. ;CONSTITUTION: Resorcinol is reacted with acetic acid in the presence of at least one protonic acid catalyst selected from the group consisting of sulfuric, hydrochloric, polyphosphoric, p-toluenesulfonic, methaesulfonic and camphorsulfonic acids and a strong acidic ion exchange resin while removing water formed as a by-product by distillation, etc. The acetic acid is used in an amount of 0.5-100mol based on 1mol resorcinol. The catalyst is used in an amount of 0.0001 to 1mol when the mineral acid and organic sulfonic acid are used and 0.1wt.% to 2 times of the resorcinol in the case of the strong acidic ion exchange resin. The reaction is carried out at 50-200°C for 30min to 30hr. The subject compound is useful as a synthetic intermediate for 2,4- dihydroxy-3-propylacetophenone which is a raw material for a therapeutic agent for allergic diseases and a raw material, etc., for photosensitive materials or antisuntan cosmetics.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1996,JPO
