A multicolor LED structure is composed of a stacked vertical structure of individual double heterostructure (DH) LEDs of III-V semiconductor compounds emitting light in different colors. The application of separate voltages to each LED enables the control of the relative intensities of emitted light from the LEDs. The multicolor structure includes three LEDs, one red, one blue and one green LED, enabling a full color display by providing a two-dimensional array of elements of these multicolor LEDs, the elements' colors controlled in accordance with a time variant multicolor display signal, such as a color video signal.
