Prepn. of unsatd. alcohols by catalytic hydrogenation of acids or fatty esters at 200-300 deg C and 1 -10 MPa, is by the following reaction: R1COOR2 + 2H2 ? R1CH2OH + R2OH; where R1 = 10-22C unsatd. aliphatic radical; R2 = 1-10C (pref. Me, Et or Pr) alkyl (opt. unsatd.). The catalyst is bi-metallic, contg. Co and a metal chosen from Sn, Pb, and Ge, deposited on a support which may be alumina, silica, silica-alumina, metallic oxides of gps. IIB and IVB, active carbon or graphite. Also claimed are the catalyst and its prepn. Pref. the catalyst contains 0.1 - 20 wt.% of Co and 0.1 - 30 wt.% of Sn, Pb, or Ge : the atomic ratio of Sn, Pb, or Ge to Co is 0.01 : 1 to 10 :1(more pref. 1:1 to 5:1). The support has a surface area of 10 - 500 m2/g. The catalyst is prepared by impregnation of the support by an aq. or organic soln. of salts of Co and Sn, Pb, or Ge, washing and drying at temps. between 80 -120 deg C. :alternatively it is obtd. in-situ by the sol-gel method, washed and dried at 80 - 120 deg C. It is reduced in-situ by a soln. of sodium borohydride or by H2.
