New catalytic composition comprising a mixture of lithium halide, of a halide hydrocarbylaluminum and of at least one compound of a catalytic element, in particular a nickel complex. Method of oliomérisation and co - oligomerization of olefins, catalysed by the said composition. The mixture, the liquid at the beginning of the reaction, is gradually converted into a solid which is thus easily separated from the reaction products.
