The transfer unit (20) is a finned block through which water-pipes pass. The combustion chamber (10) comprises a shaft enclosing the combustion gases and contains passages for cooling water in one ro more walls. The front wall (18) of the chamber and transfer unit consists of separate assemblies. The chamber sidewalls (14,16) can contain recesses (22) accommodating pipe ends protruding beyond the outermost fins (24) of the transfer unit, or connecting or deflecting components (32) on them. Other recesses can accommodate the close-fitting outermost fins. The chamber corners can be of greater corner radius at the inlet and smaller radius at the side accommodating the transfer unit.
