METHOD AND DEVICE FOR TREATING A GAS CONTAINING SULFUR HYDROGEN AND SULFUR ANHYDRIDE, COMPRISING A SULFUR REMOVAL STEP BY COOLING THE GAS EFFLUENT

A process for the treatment of a gas containing H2S and SO2 contacting the gas in a gas/liquid reactor-contactor (2) with an organic solvent (1) containing a catalyst. A gaseous effluent (10) is recovered containing water vapour and sulphur vapour (converted from H2S and SO2). The gaseous effluent is cooled by an organic solvent in a cooling zone (7), giving a suspension of sulphur crystals in the solvent. The sulphur is separated from the solvent in a separation zone (30) and a gas is recovered containing water (free from sulphur), a solvent depleted in sulphur which is recycled to (7) and sulphur (15), from the separation zone. Also claimed is the apparatus for effecting the process.
