PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To produce the subject compound capable of carrying out ultraviolet curing by reacting chitosan with an acrylic or a methacrylic acid derivative having an aldehyde group.;SOLUTION: (A) Chitosan (a basic polysaccharide prepared by deacetylating chitin) is reacted with (B) an acrylic or a methacrylic acid derivative having an aldehyde group, preferably 2-hydroxy-3-(4-formyl-2-methoxy)phenoxypropyl acrylate or 2-hydroxy-3-(4-formyl-2-methoxyy)phenoxypropyl methacrylate at preferably 0°C to ambient temperature to produce, e.g. a compound represented by formula I {R is H or methyl; (n) is the degree of substitution of an N-alkyl; [(m)+(n)] is 1} (e.g. a compound represented by formula II or III). In the above reaction, the ratio of the amounts of the components A to B may be determined according to the objective degree, or the like, of the alkylation of the component A. A polymer obtained by irradiating a composition containing the compound represented by formula I is a hopeful substance for an antimicrobial coating material, a dental material, or the like.;COPYRIGHT: (C)2000,JPO
