A novel carbonate compound represented by the general formula[I]:R1CH2O-CO-OCH2R2 [I]wherein R1 represents a hydrogen atom, an alkyl group or analkyl group substituted with one or more halogen atoms, and R2represent an alkyl group having no hydrogen atom at the.alpha.-position thereof or an alkyl group substituted with one or morehalogen atoms having no hydrogen atom at the .alpha.-positionthereof, with the proviso that R1 is not identical to R2, whichhas excellent properties as solvent, is disclosed. A non-aqueouselectrolytic solution and a battery utilizing the novelcarbonate compound are also disclosed.
