The gear shift lever unit transforms the tilting movements of the lever (1) into electrical control signals. The unit has a rotatable disc (30) with a slot through which the gear lever protrudes. As the lever is moved the disc rotates around its axis so that an angular position of the disc is unambiguously assigned to each position of the lever. An electrical contact element (32) is mounted on the upper side of the disc (30) and completes electrical circuits through several contact areas on a PCB. Position notches (33) on the circumference of the disc engage a spring loaded roller (50) to positively locate the different gear positions.
