A system for optical identification of arcing in encapsulated switchgear uses a sensor (1) comprising a photoelectric receiver within the switchgear (2) to which an arc evaluator (3) is connected. The sensor is also connected to a light source (6) for test signals, of less intensity than arcing, generated by a test generator (7). A test receiver (8), tuned to the test light signal, is switched in parallel with the arc evaluator, to which an arc simulator (9) is connected. These are all linked to a microprocessor controller (4). Periodic arc simulation and test signals are transmitted.The occurrence of arcing in the switchgear is monitored by the sensor and transmitted as an electrical signal to the arc evaluator, where it is measured for intensity, increase and duration. If these exceed critical factors, a fault is detected and an alarm signal sent to the microprocessor which activates an alarm output (11).
