PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a twisted nematic liquid crystal display element of a normally black mode which can display a high-quality image with decreased asymmetry for viewing angles when an image of a medium tone is displayed without decreasing the contrast characteristics. ;SOLUTION: The twisted nematic liquid crystal display element of a normally black mode is equipped with at least a driving liquid crystal cell 2 consisting of at least a pair of transparent substrates having electrodes and a nematic liquid crystal which is aligned in a twisted state when no voltage is applied, and with two polarizing plates 1, 1' disposed on and under the liquid crystal cell 2, and an optically compensated film having fixed twisted nematic alignment of a liquid crystal showing optically positive uniaxial property in a liquid crystal state and a film 3 showing optically negative anisotropy, both films disposed between the cell 2 and the two polarizing plates.;COPYRIGHT: (C)2001,JPO
