PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a silicon nitride base heating resistor, containing a rare earth element(RE) by a specific ratio in terms of its oxide (RE2O3), excellent in durability by limiting to a specific value the molar ratio of the oxygen content in terms of silicon oxide of the difference, obtained by subtracting the oxygen content of RE2O3 from the total oxygen content of the resistor, to RE2O3 and making a first phase excluding an electrically conductive component and silicon nitride into melilite. ;SOLUTION: This heating resistor based on silicon nitride contains the rare earth metal, i.e., 1-6 mol% RE2O3 in the silicon nitride and the electrically conductive component and has 1-5 molar ratio above defined. The first phase excluding the electrically conductive component and silicon nitride is preferably made into melilite or disilicate excellent in durability at high temperature. The electrically conductive component is selected from silicides, etc., of one or more elements of Ti, Zr, Hf, V, Nb, Ta, Cr, Mo and W. This resistor is suitable for a heating element inside a ceramic heater and various heaters such as a glow plug.;COPYRIGHT: (C)2000,JPO
