The present invention is used for sorting old or false banknotes, for determining their payment value as well as for searching and for detecting them through the production of full images of both sides of said banknotes. This invention can also be used for analysing the whole set of decay signs. The device for sorting and counting banknotes includes a control unit, a single-piece feeding unit whose supply speed is automatically adjusted according to the dimensions of the banknote, a transport system, a forwarding and counting unit, and a unit for separating the flow of banknotes and for directing them towards one of the storage baskets. The unit for determining the authenticity, the value and the decay level includes scanning devices used for producing a visible image and an infrared image, and also for producing a visible image and an induction-generated image.
