PURPOSE: An apparatus and method is provided to achieve a high accuracy error detection by measuring the temperature of pipe through the use of a sensor arranged in the outdoor unit. CONSTITUTION: An apparatus comprises an entrance temperature sensing unit(30) for sensing the temperature of the entrance of compressor using a compressor entrance temperature sensor installed at the entrance of the compressor; an entrance temperature storing unit(50) for storing the lower limit of the temperature of compressor entrance obtained from an experiment or simulation for judging whether the wiring is erroneously executed; and an erroneous wiring determination unit(60) for receiving the compressor entrance temperature and the lower limit of the temperature of compressor entrance from the entrance temperature sensing unit, comparing the received temperature, and determining whether the wiring is erroneously executed. A method comprises the steps of operating an indoor unit at a standard cooling mode for a predetermined time period, detecting the compressor entrance temperature and comparing the detected temperature with the lower limit appropriate to the indoor/outdoor temperature and capacity of indoor unit; and turning off the indoor unit if the compressor entrance temperature is higher than the lower limit.
