Photonic 2-D crystal integrated into waveguide on silicon substrate

An integrated optical circuit includes waveguides 3, 4 formed on an insulating layer 2 on a silicon substrate 1 and at least one photonic crystal formed by a periodic array of vertically slanted or upright parallel needles 6 or holes. The needles 6 extend from a below a lower boundary surface of the waveguides to above an upper boundary surface of the waveguides and can be produced by corpuscular radiation deposition. The array can be engineered to selectively attenuate and divert light traveling between the waveguides 3 and 4.
