Estrogen related receptor .alpha. (ERR.alpha.) is involved in control ofcartilage formation in mammals. Increasing ERR.alpha. activity causesstimulation of cartilage formation, providing a means of therapeuticintervention in diseases such asarthritis which involve cartilage destruction.Compounds may be screened for their potential as therapeutics by screeningtheir effect on ERR.alpha. cartilage promoting activity.
