The utility meter has a signal encoder (36) and a data remote- transmission interface (38). An auxiliary unit (16) has an electro-optical sensor device (34) for optically detecting the visual count indicator of the utility meter, and converting the optical signal into an electronic signal for the signal encoder. The electro-optical sensor device may deliver a digital image signal to an OCR unit (36).
