An optical image-capture device (OICD) (11) records a first image area (FIA) on a supply meter (1), in which there is a display device (21). An evaluatory/control unit (ECU) (9) picks up an electrical image signal from the OICD and uses a partial image signal from the FIA to detect data representing a meter count. A data transmitter (33) linked to the ECU transmits data from an automatic meter count recording device in a supply meter to a central data-processing unit.
