PURPOSE: To measure the abrasion loss of a rail even when the cross-section shape of the rail continuously changes in the length direction by projecting slit light rays in a plane which is nearly perpendicular to the rail from a bogie which can run on rails and picking up the optical cutting images of the rails at a plurality of positions. ;CONSTITUTION: A data collecting device 100 mounted on a moving bogie which can run on rails is provided with fixed sensors 11-14 which obtain the picture data of the cross-sectional shape of a basic rail and movable sensors 15-18 which obtain the picture data of the cross-sectional shape of a tongue rail. The laser light sources of the sensors 11-18 project slit light rays in a plane perpendicular to the rails and the CCD cameras of the sensors 11-18 pick up the optical cutting images of the rails at a plurality of preset locations. A measured picture processing device 22 finds the cross-sectional shapes of the rails by processing the cutting images of the rails and stores the found cross-sectional shapes of the rails by correlating the shapes with the image picking-up locations by sending the shapes to the measured data storing medium of a data depot 50 through a CPU 21 and antenna 46.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1996,JPO
