PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a new and useful nucleic acid utilizable for detecting a dechlorinating bacterium capable of dechlorinating a chlorinated ethylene or a chlorinated ethane, a labeled probe composed of the nucleic acid for detecting the dechlorinating bacterium, to provide a method for detecting the dechlorinating bacterium using the same and a method for dechlorinating. ;SOLUTION: The nucleic acid is composed of 17-30 nucleotides preferentially hybridizing to a chlorinated ethylene degrading gene of the dechlorinating bacterium and has a base sequence of sequence numbers 1-46 (refer to the specification). A polymerase chain reaction(PCR) is carried out by using the nucleic acid as a primer and a nucleic acid in a sample as a template, and the dechlorinating bacterium is detected from the resultant synthesized DNA fragment, or the labeled probe composed of the nucleic acid used for the primer is brought into contact with the sample to carry out RNA or DNA hybridization and the dechlorinating bacterium is detected by using the label as an index. The detected dechlorinating bacterium is introduced into soil or underground water contaminated with the chlorinated ethylene or chlorinated ethane to degrade the chlorinated ethylene or chlorinated ethane.;COPYRIGHT: (C)2003,JPO
