PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a new and useful nucleic acid capable of selectively detecting a dechlorination bacterium having high decomposition activity and preferentially hybridized at a specific position in an upstream area of tceA gene of the dechlorination bacterium and to provide a method for detecting the dechlorination bacterium by using the nucleic acid and a method for decomposing chlorinated ethylene or ethane.;SOLUTION: The method for detecting the highly active dechlorination bacterium comprises carrying out PCR (polymerase chain reaction) by using the nucleic acid preferentially hybridized at an upstream position of tceA gene which is a chlorinated ethylene decomposing gene of the dechlorination bacterium and in the area having a base sequence characteristic to the highly active dechlorination bacterium and composed of 10-50 nucleotide as a primer and using a nucleic acid in a sample as a template and detecting the synthesized DNA fragment. The method for decomposing chlorinated ethylene or ethane comprises introducing the dechlorination bacterium detected by the method into polluted soil or groundwater.;COPYRIGHT: (C)2003,JPO
