The counting and separating machine has a dead zone provided in the separation area of metal caps (2). The metal caps pass the dead zone one at a time without stopping. Photocellsor counting units (6) for metal caps passing through the dead zone are provided facing each other in the dead zone. A detent (7) prevents the passage of metal caps to the dead zone area after counting the number of metal caps.
