METHOD OF REMOVING AND RECOVERING ELEMENTAL SULFUR FROM HIGHLY REDUCING GAS STREAMS CONTAINING SULFUR GASES

A method is provided for the removal of sulfur compounds out of feed gases, such as synthesis gas or coal gas, and the recovery of elemental sulfur from the sulfur compounds, by contacting the feed gas with a catalyst, that is either activated carbon or an oxide-based catalyst, and an oxidant, such as sulfur dioxide, in a reaction medium (1) to convert the sulfur compound in the feed gas into elemental sulfur. The elemental sulfur is recovered by separating it from the reaction medium (1).
