PURPOSE: To provide a process for (CFx)n adsorbent composition suitable for use in packed columns, capable of reducing or even eliminating the problems associated with the handling of (CFx)n fine particles by combining the (CFx)n fine particles starting material with non-fluorinated carbonaceous material prior to the formation of solid body, and an intermediate materials used therefor. CONSTITUTION: The method comprises steps of (a) combining a (CFx)n starting material with a non-fluorinated carbonaceous material, wherein x in the (CFx)n starting material is from about 0.6 to 1.2 and n is an integer, to form a mixture; (b) applying sufficient pressure on the mixture to form a shaped solid body; (c) heating the shaped solid body to a temperature of at least 100 deg.C to form a heated shaped solid body; and (d) exposing the heated shaped solid body to a fluorine-containing gas under conditions sufficient to fluorinate the heated shaped solid body to produce a (CFx)n final product, wherein x is from about 0.5 to 1.2. The intermediate material for the formation of a (CFx)n adsorbent comprises a major portion of (CFx)n wherein x is from about 0.6 to 1.2 and n is an integer and a minor portion of a non-fluorinated carbonaceous material.
