PURPOSE: A shock absorbing structure of a rear cross member for a vehicle is provided to absorb some of collision energy in colliding a muffler, to secure the deformation space of a longitudinal extension unit by maximizing the movement of the muffler by holding the strength of the rear cross member and maximally deforming the rear cross member, and to maximize the collision energy absorption efficiency by sufficiently straining the extension unit. CONSTITUTION: In a rear cross member(20) of which both ends are fixed and installed to rear bottom sides of both longitudinal frames(10), including lower and upper members(22,24), a shock absorbing structure of the rear cross member forms a shock absorbing part to the lower member colliding with a muffler(30) mounted to the bottom side of one longitudinal frame to move forward in a rear-end collision. The shock absorbing part comprises an elongated hole(26) or a bent unit formed in the longitudinal direction. Plural elongated holes are arranged at the set intervals in the transverse direction of the rear cross member. A reinforcing unit is disposed to the lower member of the opposite side colliding with the muffler.
