PURPOSE: A docking system and method for a mobile robot is provided to quickly and precisely dock the mobile robot with a charging unit by compensating the position of the mobile robot in real time. CONSTITUTION: A docking system for a mobile robot is composed of a charging unit(100), and the mobile robot(200). The charging unit includes an infrared transmitting port(1), and an infrared receiving port(2). The infrared transmitting port transmits position basis data and guide data for guiding the mobile robot into the charging unit. The infrared receiving port receives position and direction data of the mobile robot. The mobile robot includes an infrared receiving port(3), and an infrared transmitting port(4). The infrared receiving port in the mobile robot receives the position basis data and guide data from the charging unit. The infrared transmitting port(4) in the mobile robot transmits position and direction data to the charging unit. Thus, the mobile robot docks with the charging unit quickly and precisely by data communication between the mobile robot and the charging unit.
