PURPOSE: An installation detecting device of a foreign matter pan of a dish washer and a control method thereof are provided to prevent garbage from being collected directly in a foreign matter tank, and to improve convenience by stopping the operation of the dish washer in removing the foreign matter pan. CONSTITUTION: An installation detecting device of a foreign matter pan of a dish washer is composed of a key input unit(110) detecting the key input state and converting into the electric signal, a hall sensor(115) detecting the installation of the foreign matter pan of a foreign matter tank and converting into the electric signal, a microcomputer(120) reading, calculating, memorizing and controlling the signals from the hall sensor and outputting the signal, a display unit(125) displaying the state of the dish washer such as installation of the foreign matter pan, and a driving unit(130) stopping the dish washer according to the signal from the microcomputer in the absence of the foreign matter pan.
