The method involves determining the load quantity for the motor vehicle and adapting the shift point for the gearbox depending on the load. A suitable braking stage of a wear-free brake is activated in engine braking mode using the determined load quantity and/or an active intervention is made into the braking system. The shift point for the gearbox is adapted for reduced harmful emissions.
