The method involves evaluating soot load of a particle filter based on a preset algorithm, and regenerating the filter when the evaluated load attains a given reference load. A value of physicochemical characteristic e.g. exothermic characteristic, of the reference load is calculated from the evaluation, and is measured. The calculated and measured values are compared. A regeneration strategy of the filter is adapted by modifying the reference load or the algorithm according to the comparison, where the modification is carried out based on an adaptation rule tending towards nominal soot load.
