The flame monitor (1) has a sensor element that produces a sensor signal indicating the presence of a flame and a sensor circuit (6) connected to a control circuit (9) and to the sensor element. The sensor circuit provides the control circuit with a signal inducting the presence or absence of a flame and provides a characteristic response to a test start signal irrespective of the sensor signal. AN Independent claim is also included for the following: (a) a method of monitoring the operation of a burner with a flame monitor.
