Method for avoiding damage within a print machine that could be caused by microwave radiation emitted by microwave fixing units (3). According to the method unwanted effects of the microwave radiation are automatically detected so that they can be limited by counter measures. An independent claim is made for a device for detecting unwanted effects of microwave radiation with which glowing or burning print material or a voltage break through within the microwave unit are immediately detected so that counter measures can be triggered.
