The method involves supplying a high power output to a fixing device (1), such that an unwanted, waste print substrate (3) in the fixing device is caused to smoke for a short time. An injection efficiency of a microwave radiation of the fixing device and/or the time duration of the fixing device is adjusted by an adjusting unit (13) in an applicator (10) of the fixing device. Air is discharged from the applicator of the fixing device and is directed to a smoke detector (12) that detects smoke in the applicator by the reflected light. An independent claim is also included for a fixing device comprising a control device.
