The method involves detecting a target vehicle that is immediately preceding a vehicle (V). The distance between the vehicle and target is lower than a threshold distance and the speed of the vehicle is greater than the target speed. An economic torque is determined based on the target speed, and a drive train torque is controlled to a torque that is equal to least values of the economic torque and torque required by a driver.
