A card, ticket or pass has a thermally writeable region and magnetic or electronic data storage means. When it is issued, an image of the authorised holder or purchaser, along with other information, is thermally written. Further information is stored in the data storage means. The card may be authenticated by comparing information written in the thermally writeable region with information in the data storage means. The identity of the card holder may be checked visually by observation of the image. The card may be used as an aircraft boarding pass or cinema, sporting event, etc, entrance ticket, as a means of ensuring that its bearer is the person to whom it was issued. After use, cards which have been collected may be reused.
