The Helsinki region Travel Card system has been in full operation since 2002. Over a million cards have been sold. Daily users number is over 300,000. The system covers all modes of transport: commuter trains, trams, buses, ferries and the metro. According to surveys, passengers are highly satisfied with the system. Tickets in use include paper single tickets, Travel Cards based on contactless card technology, Travel Cards based on contact card technology, and single tickets in the form of SMS messages. The life span of the current system ends around 2012-2014, after which a new system is needed at the latest. YTV has launched a project called Ticket and Information System 2014, which aims at renewing the whole system by 2014. In addition to a new ticket system, a realtime passenger information system will be introduced. The project will be implemented in two phases. In the first phase, the Travel Cards are changed and in the second phase, the whole system is renewed.
