Non-mechanical method for cleaning soapstone and/or other stones using two cleaning compositions, one aqueous and the other non-aqueous. Non-mechanical method for cleaning soapstone and/or other stones using two cleaning compositions, one aqueous, applied first for a pretreatment, and the other non-aqueous, for the main treatment. The first composition comprises 0.5-10% diethylene glycol monobutyl ether; 0.5-10% ethylene glycol monobutyl ether; 0.1-% each of alkali hydroxide and alkali silicate; 0-5-10% each of alkali phosphate, alkali isopropylbenzene sulfonate, and isotridecanol ethoxylate; 0.5-10% n-alkylbenzene sulfonate, ether sulfonate or fatty alcohol ethoxylate and 0.5-10% fatty acid soap (alkali); and the second composition contains 10-50% each of 'meta-naphatene' and 8-10C isopraffins, and 10% 6-8C n-paraffins. An independent claim is also included for a device that ensures successful cleaning only by correct combination of the two compositions.
