Process for determining the suitability of an ionophoresis reservoir electrode to deliver a medicine. The process uses an apparatus which comprises ionophoresis reservoir electrode (10) having a contact surface (12), an electrical connection (14), a reservoir containing an ionized medicine (16), a second electrode (18) and a separation medium (22). The separation medium allows passage of the medicine under the influence of an electric current but only a very limited amount when there is no current. To test the suitability of the reservoir electrode, the medicine is allowed to pass into the separation medium under the influence of a current, and the amount passing in is measured. Then it is tested again without the current, to determine whether the amount passing is directly controllable by control of the current. Suitable separation media include ion exchange membranes, ion exchange resins, ion exchange beads, polyelectrolyte salts, hydrogels, and semi-permeable membranes.
