The invention relates to a device (EG+FP) for operating in different variable function modes comprising receiving (E) and transmitting (S) units or communicating with at least one network unit (NE) by means of at least one communications network (KM), a removable front plate (FP) exhibiting at least one characteristic recognisable by an evaluating and controlling unit (V) and an evaluating and controlling unit (V) for evaluating characteristic(s) relevant to at least one function which is performed by the device (EG+FP) for determining the evaluation result, transmitting said result to the network unit (NE) and for receiving data pertaining to the activation and controll of at least one function performable by the device according to the evaluation result.
