The tire breaker layers(6,7) extend circumferentially and from one tire shoulder to the other. Reinforcing cords(16,17) in (6,7) extend the full width of these layers, end at the layer edges and lie at 6-40[deg] to the circumferential direction(U) with the tire at normal operating pressures. The angle(alpha ,beta ) between the main cord direction and the tire circumference changes across the breadth of (6,7). Cords(16,17) have the same orientation in the circumferential direction over their full length from one tire shoulder to the other. The cord angles(alpha ,beta ) in the tire crown area, over an axial distance(aK) forming 20-30% of the breaker layer breadth(aB) may be of equal size. At a breaker layer edge area outside the stated crown area and comprising not less than20% of the breaker layer width, the cord angle increases or decreases continuously. The cord angle in a shoulder area of the tire is different to that at the crown area and can be either smaller or larger. Cord angle at one shoulder may be different to that at the other shoulder area. A preferred cord angle at the axial center of the breaker layer is 18-22[deg] while at the edge of the breaker layer is 28-35[deg]. An independent claim is included for a process for manufacturing a vehicle tire with the claimed construction in which: (a) a layer of parallel reinforcing cords are deformed to align at different angles to the circumferential direction; (b) embedded in a rubber coating to form a sub-layer; and (c) a finished breaker layer is assembled from several sub-layers.
