Process for obtaining hydrogen from a gas containing methane, especially natural gas, in which the hydrocarbons contained in the gas are catalytically unfolded, in a reformer (4) and by means of water vapor, in hydrogen, carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide and a catalytic conversion of the carbon monoxide produced in carbon dioxide and hydrogen, in which carbon dioxide is removed from the converted gas stream (8) is carried out in a postponed conversion step with water vapor by means of a gas wash (7) and then the gas stream (10) washed and free of hydrogen is separated, in a pressure change adsorption installation (11), in a stream of product gas (12) consisting in hydrogen and an exhaust gas stream (13), and in which the exhaust gas stream (13), together with the hydrogen (14) that is derived from the gas stream (10) behind the zone of gas washing (7), is fed as a fuel gas widely carbon-free to the reformer (4) and is burned there.
