The invention relates to a process for evening out a molten metal film produced by strip casting, in particular a steel film, in which the melt which has been applied to a circulating belt is to have as uniform as possible a thickness and properties across the width of the strip, by means of a gas stream directed at the surface of the metal film, characterised in that in order to even out the metal film across its width the gas stream is applied to the surface of the metal film counter to the direction of flow of the cast metal film at an angle of between 0 and 80° to the vertical.
