The invention relates to an installation for protecting the traction motors of electric and Diesel-electric locomotives. According to the invention, the installation employs a digital system (1) comprising the central processing unit (2) provided with a nonvolatile memory (3) and a real time clock (4) and input (5) and output (6) interfaces. The claimed installation receives data relating to the electric parameters of the traction motors from the transducers (7) and controls the execution elements (8) in case of protection actuation. It displays data corresponding to the operation duties by means of some displaying devices (9, 10) located in the driver's compartments. The claimed installation protects the traction motors against wheel skid, unshrinking of pinions, overload and short-circuit. By the connection of other digital systems of the locomotive, the installation can also have diagnosing functions.
