A simplified SPICE model for an IGBT rated for 1200A and 1700V is proposed. The modeling was introduced as one of the development steps of a chopper DC-DC converter used for traction motors of diesel-electric locomotives, applied so improvements on torque, consequently in adhesion and velocity control is achieved, thus being a component involved with some of the main concerns of railroad transportation. The need of a simplified technique is due the fact that a practical and quick approach was wanted and none standard model was found for the intended IGBT part number. Another motivational factor is that some traditional methods were evaluated and it was noticed that some knowledge of the IGBT construction would be necessary in order to use the regular SPICE model or to develop an analytical solution. The modeling achieved uses no more than the information found on the component datasheet described in tables format. The validation was done in two different topologies with several current levels and different switching frequencies. A basic thermal modeling, yet with good results, is also performed. A simplistic form of modeling is achieved making it a quick and easy tool, suitable for end applications developers. The final application is meant to regulate output currents up to 1000A with input DC links up to 900V and the proposed approach was tested to be suitable to simulations with such levels of current and voltages.
