The invention relates to a system and method for providing background music service. Especially, the invention relates to a system and method for providing background music service according to request of an originator or a receiver during phone call by use of conference call service, which is provided by an exchanger on a network such as a PSTN (Public Switched Telephone Network), mobile telecommunication network, and the Internet. The invention comprises a communication part which is provided with background music service according to a request of an originator or receiver for background music service during a phone call; a network exchanger that provides with the conference call service and sets up a conference call channel through the network according to the conference call request; and a background music providing apparatus that provides the background music service by use of the conference call service through the conference call channel completed as above.
