Procedure for determining one or more physical properties of a rolled smoking article or filter bar, said method comprising arranging a rolled smoking article or filter bar in a field of vision, illuminating said field of vision, obtaining images of said article for rolled-up smoking or filter bar in said field of view to form an image, rotate said rolled-up smoking article or filter bar around its axis inside said field of view and obtain samples of the image repeatedly, and analyze said image for determining the winding direction of an outer layer of said rolled smoking article or filter bar.
