Transdermal application of capsaicin (or a capsaicin analog) in aconcentration from greater than about 5 % to about 10 % by weighthas been discovered to be an extremely effective therapy for treatingneuropathic pain, so long as an anesthetic, preferably by means of atransdermal patch, is administered initially to the affected area to minimizethe expected side effects from subsequent capsaicin application.
