The retaining rod (4), fixed by one end to the underside of a panel (1) such as a vehicle floor, is made with two separate spherical sections (8, 9) shaped to engage with matching holes in a supporting rack (3) for a series of under-body pipes or cables (2), and a protective shield (5) that fits beneath it. The two spherical sections are of different diameters, the lower one (9) being smaller than the upper one (8) so that it can pass through a hole in the rack before engaging with the shield. The upper end (7) of the rod can be fixed to the panel by welding, a screw thread or swaging.
